Magnesium alloy chassisWhen we designed Kartlaser we went through hundreds of design choices to select the right components and materials. We chose a special structural Magnesium-Zinc alloy for strength, robustness and durability. We selected this alloy for Kartlaser for several reason but the most interesting one was weight. By avoiding steel, which is heavy and rusts easily, and aluminium, which has similar hardness and toughness characteristics, we have been able to reduce the weight of each Kartlaser tool significantly.
Precision laser alignmentInstead of cheap lasers that are prevalent in laser alignment products, we specified high precision laser modules that are not only axially aligned to within ±0.05° at 10m before installation, but that are also hand-aligned inside the Kartlaser using a tripod adjuster mechanism, surface plates and a special level setup table that we designed and machined from a solid block of aluminium. This attention to detail allows a pair of lasers to be perfectly adjusted and aligned during manufacture.
Multi-directional levelsBy integrating a unique multi-directional bubble level we help you get your kart leveled for all the critical alignment tasks. The bubble levels in Kartlaser are not just an off-the-shelf product. Our levels are custom made to our specification. The diameter and depth of liquid in a bubble level affects it’s sensitivity, and we found we could only achieve best results with a custom size.
High power magnetsWe specially designed and manufactured our sintered Niodymium-Ferrite-Boron magnets to the highest strength available. Nd-Fe-B magnets are generally regarded as the strongest magnets commercially available because they are able to the store a much higher density of magnetic energy than other forms of magnets. In fact, to ship our magnets by air from the manufacturer, we had to get special clearance and undergo special Gauss screening due to their magnetic power.

Custom circuit boardsWe chose to make our PCB more robust than normal PCBs, as we know how tools can get dropped in the karting workshop. That’s why our PCBs are 50% thicker than standard PCBs, to avoid any cracks during service, and our electronic circuits are thicker and wider than normal. All of this is simply to help make your Kartlaser totally reliable; karts are delicate enough, and you don’t want any unreliable measurement kit.
Reliable robust electronicsMany kart lasers use simple on/off switches to control power to the laser. But many racers have been let down by laser products that could not be used because the battery had expired. Kartlaser is microprocessor-controlled exactly to avoid this problem, automatically switching off the power for you, saving money and giving you peace of mind that your measurement tool will still be working when you need it.
20MHz microprocessorThe microprocessor controlling your Kartlaser is selected for its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, from -40° to +85°, which is certainly enough for all the operational environment we could consider for karting events, and it can also survive drop shocks of up to 1,000 G. The processor runs at 20mHz, and contains on-board EEPROM memory that allows us to programme the entire system in a single chip – known as a System-On-Chip (SOC).
Embedded softwareCoding was carried out in the C high-level language. C is a professional programming language that was used to develop operating systems like Linux and OS X, and is even used on space vehicles such as the SpaceX Falcon rockets, and it allows us to both make maintainable, robust code and access machine-level ports and registers directly from the source code. The C source code is compiled into a machine executable which is burned to the target microprocessor in every Kartlaser.

Kartlaser Advanced Technology
Special potting compositeBecause of the strength of the magnets, we had to ensure they were anchored securely inside the body of the tool. We worked with a specialist German F1 composite materials supplier to test and select a specific composite that ensures the magnets stay in place inside the Kartlaser body. It’s a slow setting three-part epoxy resin that is specially formulated for adherence to magnesium alloys. We selected this tough, black glassy material to avoid any UV or cold shrinkage and to resist any workshop knocks.
Duracell™ lithium batteriesThe choice of a high quality battery was also important. We needed something with good burst power, to power the laser module and electronics at full power for a few minutes, as well as a long shelf life, as we expect it to last several seasons before needing replacement. We ran extensive tests lasting several weeks and chose brand name Duracell™ lithium CR2 cells, commonly used in photography and widely available. They are rated at 800mAh, and typically at installation are able to last several years.
Corrosion-proof screwsEven the screws we use on Kartlaser are high quality, custom-made from a special grade of passivated nickel-chromium stainless steel – the metal used in surgical equipment and medical implants – to avoid any corrosion issues in damp storage. And we tested them ourselves, leaving them in a saturated salt water bath for 10 weeks to see what happened – you can see the resulting photo above. We also use Torx sockets exclusively to ensure a positive, precise torque connection to the screwdriver bit that helps avoid any damage to the chassis or electronics during assembly.
Weighs just 200gWhy did we choose magnesium? Because the magnesium alloy we selected not only resists corrosion due to the high zinc content, and not only has a similar toughness and strength to other lightweight alloys like aluminium; but it also weighs about 35% less. And that means we can reduce the weight of the Kartlaser drastically: after machining, the bare chassis casting weighs in at a tiny 133g, and when fully built with all components, just 200g.

Kartlaser Unique Features
Dual Direction Base (DDB)At the heart of the Kartlaser system is the unique new patent-pending Dual Direction Base. The DDB saves you both time and money over traditional laser alignment systems, because it allows you use one set of lasers for both steering setup and chassis alignment tasks, without needing to buy expensive dual laser systems, or two sets of single-purpose lasers. The DDB is a simple, patent-pending technology that allows you to maximize your investment in laser alignment tooling.
Direct caster measurementThe patent-pending direct differential caster measurement mechanism of Kartlaser is incredibly simple to use but hides careful mathematics. Kartlaser uniquely allows you measure caster without zeroing the steering mechanism or using expensive additional tools, because it uses differential measurement technology rather than an absolute system. You can instantly read off the caster angle in degrees making it quicker and easier to use without additional cost.
Triple target gaugesOlder kart laser systems need additional targets to allow front-to-back alignment or caster readings. Kartlaser has integrated both left and right targets for front-to-back measurement directly on the side of each unit, which means you have almost no setup time and also don’t need to buy expensive additional accessory kits. As as mentioned already, we have direct differential caster built into each unit, so you don’t need to buy expensive additional add-on gauges.
Direct king pin angleIt’s not something you will need every day, but knowing if a king pin angle is off will help you assess if a kart chassis is distorted or if the king pin itself is bent. And that knowledge can therefore allow you to assess what you need to do to correct it. Kartlaser allows you to measure the king pin angle directly, using a differential system that gives you the angle immediately in degrees, without additional equipment or accessory kits.
Kartlaser saves time & money
QuikLok™ dynamic strapsIn some cases you want to adjust your kart quickly or dynamical, without removing the hubs, and so there won’t be a magnetic surface on which to attach the Kartlaser. That’s why we included small slots in the side of the body, and a set of QuikLok™ straps with every Kartlaser. QuickLoks™ work like tie wraps, in that they can be slotted and clicked into place, but they can also be quickly unlocked again, and are re-usable over and over again.
Automatic power savingThe software running Kartlaser has been designed with three main functions in mind: reducing power consumption to extend battery life, protecting from accidental activation in transit or storage, and providing overall ease of use through a single button interface. That’s why we programmed a finite state machine to drive the main loop, and provided a reset function after a battery change – not that you will need that function very much.
Custom clamshell caseKartlaser is a robust, reliable tool, but it’s still designed for precision use, and you probably don’t want to have it getting knocked around in your toolbox and risking any damage. That’s why we made a custom tool case for Kartlaser, with precisely fitting die cut foam inserts and a hard shell that protect the units from everyday dirt, dings and dents.
Die cut case linerIt seems like a tiny thing, but a soft caseliner is essential to ensure your Kartlaser can survive transportation and the everyday bumps around a working garage. Our special foam inserts are die cut to hold your units snugly in place, allowing them to survive a drop from a height of as much as one meter.

High pressure die castingAlthough we made our first prototypes using 3D printing techniques and machining from solid blocks, the most reliable, precise way to make the chassis of Kartlaser to our exacting tolerances is through high pressure die casting. We precision pressure cast Kartlaser from corrosion-resistant high purity magnesium alloy, because it gives us an excellent product at a price that we can pass on directly to the karting community. The casting process forces molten magnesium alloy at 640°C into the special die at around 1000 bar pressure. Even the die has been specified to high precision H13 Cr-Mo-V-alloyed hot work die steel.
Numerous prototypesThe design team went through close to 40 prototypes to get Kartlaser working perfectly. We used a wide range of techniques, including rapid prototyping on a 3D printer, machining of early metal prototypes, and breadboards for electronic design and programming. If you ever look inside your unit you will see that the current PCB is marked as “V9.0” – and we still have have versions 1.0-8.2 to prove that’s not just some made-up nonsense. The software is currently at Revision 12B. The chassis went through 25 different design iterations to ensure the best possible fit of all components to the most exacting tolerances.
On-track developmentWe gave early prototypes of Kartlaser to professional engineers and mechanics working with one of German’s leading kart racing teams, the widely respected AK Racing from Garching, Munich. Many of AK Racing’s drivers have gone on to successful Formula 1 careers, including Gerhard Berger, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Andre Lotterer, Karl Wendlinger and Adrian Sutil.
